Overview
NHPC Limited is the largest hydropower development organization in India, with capabilities to undertake all the activities from conceptualization to commissioning of hydro projects. NHPC has also diversified in the field of Solar & Wind energy development etc.
NHPC was incorporated on November 7, 1975 as a Private Limited Company under the name “National Hydroelectric Power Corporation private Ltd”. NHPC was converted to Public limited company w.e.f. April, 2, 1986. The name of the company was changed to its present name “NHPC Limited” in 2008. NHPC was conferred Miniratna Status by Govt. of India in April, 2008 and became a listed company on NSE and BSE after successfully concluding its IPO in 2009. The company was conferred Navratna status in August, 2024.
NHPC has an authorized share capital of ₹ 17,500 crore, paid up share capital of ₹10,045.03 crores and an investment base (Assets) of ₹ 96029.38 Crore (standalone) as on 31.12.2025. It is an ISO: 9001:2015, ISO-14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified company. Its vision is “To be a global leading organization for sustainable development of clean power through competent, responsible and innovative values”.
INSTALLED CAPACITY: As on 01 April, 2026, NHPC's total installed capacity is 9082.90 MW including 1681.70 MW in Joint Venture, comprising 8521.20 MW from 24 Hydro Power Stations, 511.70 MW from Six Solar Power Projects and 50 MW from a Wind Power Project. NHPC's hydro share of 8521.20 MW is approximately 16.65% of the country's total installed hydro capacity of 51164.66 MW (As on 28.02.2026, as per CEA website).
PROJECTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION: NHPC (including JVs / Subsidiaries) is engaged in construction of Fifteen projects aggregating to 8954 MW as under:

- 2880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project, Arunachal Pradesh
- 500 MW Teesta-VI HE Project, Sikkim
- Under 1000 MW CPSUs scheme: (600 MW Solar PV Power Project, Gujarat; 100 MW Solar PV Power Project, Andhra Pradesh)
- 40 MW Ground Mounted Solar Power Project, Ganjam, Odisha
- 50 MW Floating Solar Power Project, West Kallada, Kerala
- Grid connected Solar PV Project, Stage-I & III at Khavda, Gujarat (200 MW each)
- 120 MW Rangit-IV HE Project, Sikkim
- 850 MW Ratle HE Project, UT of J&K by RHPCL
- 1000 MW Pakal Dul HE Project; 624 MW Kiru HE Project; 540 MW Kwar HE Project, UT of J&K by CVPPL (JV with JKSPDC)
- 1200 MW Jalaun Ultra Mega Solar Park, UP by BSUL (JV with UPNEDA). (This is a solar park and not part of capacity addition).

- 5 hydroelectric projects by NHPC
- 4 hydroelectric projects and 2 solar projects in JV mode
Additionally, three Hydroelectric projects including two in Nepal and six pump storage projects aggregating to 9830 MW are under Survey & Investigation.
RENEWABLE ENERGY INITIATIVES:
- Designated as a ‘Renewable Energy Implementing Agency (REIA)’ by MNRE – Total awarded capacity 23120 MW.
- Selected as BESS Implementing Agency (BIA) along with NTPC & SJVN – 1500 MWh allocated under CPSU component.
- Mandated for rooftop solarization in 5 states and 8 ministries under PM Surya Ghar- Muft Bijli Yojna
- Established NHPC Renewable Energy Limited (NHPC REL)
- Green Hydrogen Technology: one 25 KWe capacity pilot green hydrogen project at Leh, one pilot green hydrogen based e-mobility station at Chamba and Procurement of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Bus(s) at Chamba.
