INDIRA SAGAR (JV)

Indira Sagar Project is multipurpose project constructed across river Narmada in district Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. The reservoir capacity of Indira Sagar Dam is 12.22 BMC, which is at present largest storage capacity in India, with reservoir spread area of 913 Sq.KM at FRL(i.e. EL 262.13M). The generation of hydro power is one of the component of this multipurpose project and power benefit has been envisaged in stages in commensurate to consumptive usage of water by Madhya Pradesh as per NWDT Award. Indira Sagar Power house is having 8 Units of 125 MW each with total installed capacity of 1000 MW.
NHDC has taken over this project from GoMP on as on where basis subsequent to its formation on 01.08.2000. CCEA clearance to this project was accorded vide MoP, GoI letter dated 28.03.2002 with project cost of Rs. 4355.57 Crores (Sept. 2000 Price Level) with schedule completion by May-2005. The last unit was put to operation ahead of schedule on 30.03.2005 with capacity 106.82 MW at reservoir level upto crest level of EL 245.13 M against the rated capacity of 125 MW. Subsequent to attaining reservoir level at EL 255.00 M, the Maximum Continuous Rating (MCR) of 1000 MW was demonstrated on 25.08.2005 and CERC as per Regulation 2004 has admitted this date as project COD and sunset/cut-off date as 31.03.2007.The Capital expenditure incurred upto sunset/cutoff date is Rs.4049.85 Cr as against CCEA sanctioned cost of Rs. 4355.57 Cr.
The other major component of this multipurpose project is irrigation and canal network of this project irrigate approx. 2.70 lakh hectares land annually. The total catchment area of the Dam site is 61,642 Sq.Km. Cumulative Power generation from Indira Sagar Power Station upto December-2022 since commissioning of various units is 46012.420 MU which has been sold with average unit rate of Rs. 2.73/KWH to sole beneficiary i.e. home state Madhya Pradesh.
