Overview
NHPC Limited is the largest hydropower development organization in India, with capabilities to undertake all activities from conceptualization to commissioning of hydro projects. NHPC has also diversified into the fields of solar and wind energy development.
NHPC Ltd. (formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd.) was incorporated in 1975 under the Companies Act, 1956. The company is mandated to plan, promote, and organize an integrated and efficient development of power in all its aspects through conventional and non-conventional sources in India and abroad. NHPC is a listed company on NSE and BSE after successfully concluding its IPO in 2009.
NHPC has an authorized share capital of ₹15,000 crores, a paid-up share capital of ₹10,045.03 crores, and an investment base of ₹85,486.44 crores as of December 31, 2024.
NHPC's total installed capacity as of December 31, 2024, is 7,232.90 MW, including 1,681.70 MW in joint ventures. This comprises 6,971.20 MW from 22 hydro power stations, 211.70 MW from five solar power projects, and 50 MW from a wind power project. NHPC's hydro share of 6,971.20 MW accounts for about 14.85% of the country's total installed hydro capacity of 46,928.17 MW.
NHPC, including its JVs and subsidiaries, is presently engaged in the construction of 16 projects aggregating to a total installed capacity of 10,804 MW. This includes three hydroelectric projects: Subansiri Lower HEP (2,000 MW) and Dibang Multipurpose Project (2,880 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh, and Parbati-II HEP (800 MW) in Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, six solar projects totaling 1,290 MW are being undertaken under the MNRE CPSU scheme in Gujarat (600 MW), Rajasthan (300 MW), and Andhra Pradesh (100 MW), as well as a 40 MW Ganjam Solar Project by NHPC, a 50 MW floating solar project in West Kallada, Kerala, a 200 MW grid-connected solar project at Khavda Stage–I, and a 200 MW grid-connected solar project at Khavda Stage–III. Six hydroelectric projects and one solar project are being executed by subsidiaries or JV companies of NHPC, namely Pakal Dul HE Project (1,000 MW), Kiru HE Project (624 MW), and Kwar HE Project (540 MW) in the UT of J&K by CVPPL; Ratle HE Project (850 MW) in the UT of J&K by RHPCL; Teesta-VI HE Project (500 MW) in Sikkim by LTHPL; and Rangit-IV HE Project (120 MW) in Sikkim by JPCL.
Additionally, nine projects aggregating to a total installed capacity of 4,291 MW are under clearance stage, which includes four hydro and one solar project by NHPC on its own, and four projects (one in hydro and three in solar) in JV mode.
Furthermore, six hydroelectric projects and four pumped storage projects aggregating to a total installed capacity of 9,715 MW are in the survey and investigation stage being undertaken by NHPC.
Initiative by NHPC in Renewable Energy

During the year 2023-24, NHPC had an income from the sale of power of ₹7,957 crores with a net profit of ₹3,744 crores.

Initiative by NHPC in Renewable Energy
- NHPC, having been designated by MNRE as a 'Renewable Energy Implementing Agency (REIA)', is facilitating the development of different technology-based RE projects in line with the yearly bidding calendar. Thirty-seven RE projects aggregating to 17,260 MW are under various stages by NHPC as REIA.
- NHPC has also taken initiatives for the development of green hydrogen technology, wherein one 25 kWe capacity pilot green hydrogen project at Leh and two pilot green hydrogen-based e-mobility projects (one at Kargil, Leh, and one at Chamba, Himachal Pradesh) are under implementation. These projects are anticipated to be commissioned by FY 2024-25.
