NHPC Declares Commercial Operation of fourth unit (Unit # 4 of 250 MW) of India’s Largest Hydropower Project- 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project
NHPC Limited, a ‘Navratna’ PSU under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has declared the commercial operation of the fourth unit (Unit # 4 of 250 MW) of its 2000 MW (8x250 MW) Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, located in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The unit commenced commercial operation at 00:00 hrs on May 8, 2026 adding 250 MW of clean energy to the national grid.
On this occasion, Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Power, Government of India and the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their continued support. He also appreciated the dedicated efforts of the Subansiri Lower Project team under the leadership of Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director alongwith the valuable contributions of various departments at NHPC’s Corporate Office.
He stated that the successful commissioning highlights NHPC’s strong technical expertise and project execution capabilities and further reinforces its pivotal role in strengthening India’s energy security in line with the Government of India’s vision of a sustainable and self-reliant power sector. He also expressed confidence that the remaining units of the project will be commissioned within the targeted timelines.
With the commissioning of this unit, Subansiri Lower Project has achieved a total operational capacity of 1000 MW out of its planned 2000 MW capacity, marking a significant milestone in the project’s phased commissioning. The project is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening grid stability, meeting peak power demand and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. Prior to commercial operation, the unit successfully completed its trial run on May 1, 2026, reflecting steady progress towards the full commissioning of the project.
