Committee and 55th Board Meetings of North Eastern Regional Electricity
Board were held on 9th and 10th June 05 respectively at Hotel –‘The
Park’, New Delhi. This was the first occasion that the above meetings
were held outside the region. The meetings were hosted by National
Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd., a premier Central Power Sector
Utility, having its presence all over India in the field of hydro power
development. Whereas the TCC was chaired by Shri D.A. Shishak, CE(P) of
Nagaland, the Board meeting was chaired by none other than the Hon’ble
Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri Neiphiu Rio. The meetings were attended
by around 100 delegates, including Dy. Chief Minister of Meghalaya, &
Power Ministers of Manipur, Assam and Tripura, Member (GO&D) of CEA,
senior officers from NEREB, CEA, NRLDC, Chief Executives of CPSUs,
Electrical and Power Deptts. Boards
of the North East, Sr. Executives of various generating, transmission,
distributing and trading agencies, etc.

While welcoming the delegates in the Board meeting, Shri S.K. Garg, Director
(Finance), NHPC, he informed that NHPC has planned to invest Rs 68,000 Crores to
raise its generation capacity to 15,000 MW by 2012. Out of this amount, a lion’s
share is earmarked to be invested solely in the North Eastern part of the
country.
The important issues on which deliberations were held included betterment of the
power situation of the North East and strengthening of its transmission lines
network. The Hon’ble Chief Minister, Nagaland appreciated the efforts made by
NHPC and NEEPCO in the Region and stated that with the execution of mega
projects by NHPC like 2000 MW Subansiri Lower, time is not far when the North
Eastern Region of India would become the Power Hub of the entire country. |
