Financial
Performance
During
the year 2004-05, NHPC has registered a net profit of Rs.684.58 crores
against Rs.621.38 crores during the previous year. This is the highest
profit earned by the Corporation since its inception. The sales
turnover of the Corporation rose to Rs.1668.27 crores as against
Rs.1414.43 crores during the previous year 2003-04.
The
profits of the Corporation have shown an increasing trend due to which
financial health of the Corporation is very sound.
The Corporation has been rated ‘AAA’, the highest safety rating
for investment in domestic market by an internationally reputed credit
rating agency viz. ‘Fitch’ ratings.
The ratings assigned to the Corporation have been re-affirmed in
the year 2004-05 by these rating agencies.
The
fund requirement for the capacity addition programs for the Xth and XIth
five year plan shall be met through budgetary support, internal resources
and loans. The Corporation has
tied up line of credit of Rs.2500 crores with LIC of India, at fixed rate
interest of 8% with a total tenor of 19 years.
Besides that the Corporation has tied up another line of credit of
Rs.6500 crores with LIC of India to finance new projects, the rate of
interest has been linked to 13 years Government Security yield plus 100 bp
(basis points) with a floor rate of 6.50% p.a. and with a total tenor of
20 years. The Corporation has
set up a Treasury department to raise funds at most competitive rates
during the year 2004-05, the department has raised loans of Rs.583 crores
domestically from various banks at interest rate of 6.90% per annum with a
tenor of 12 years.
The
sales turnover of the Corporation has also been excellent over past few
years. Corporation has been
able to liquidate its old outstanding dues of SEBs by way of receipts of
bonds/long terms advances amounting to Rs.2785 crores against one time
settlement of dues scheme of Government of India.
Recommended a dividend of Rs.140 crores out of which Rs.60 crores
has already been paid to Government of India for the financial year
2004-05. Corporation paid
dividend of Rs.120 crores of the Government of India in the financial year
2003-04.
Power
Generation
During
the period under review, the operating power stations of the Corporation
generated 11286.43 million units against a target of 10800 million units.
During the previous fiscal 2003-04, Corporation generated 11045.52
million units thereby registering an increase of 2.18% during the
financial year 2004-05. The machine availability of operating power
stations of NHPC measured as capacity index is 95.28% against the MOU
target of 94.50%. Most of the power stations of NHPC exceeded the
generation target. 105 MW Loktak Power Station at Manipur generated
629.67 million units of power against the target of 488 million units.
This is the highest generation achieved by the project since its
commissioning. The 690 MW Salal Power station generated 3443.28
million units of energy against the target of 3150 million units.
The power produced from these power stations is being supplied to various
beneficiary States/Union Territory throughout India.
Realisation/Outstanding
Dues
During
the financial year 2004-05, the Corporation raised a total billing of
Rs.1634.74 crores to the various SEBs. The
total realization achieved by the Corporation is Rs.1645.58 crores.
Besides above realization, unscheduled interchanges charges of
Rs.48.85 crores and surcharge of Rs.2.65 crores has also been received
during the period. Interest on
bonds/long term advances amounting to Rs.293.08 crores has also been
received during this year. The
principle outstanding dues (in the securitization period) reduced to
Rs.214.83 crores by the end of financial year 2004-05 as compared to
Rs.220.25 crores at the end of 2003-04.
The current outstanding dues towards principle amount have been
reduced to Rs.73.80 crores as on 31.03.2005 from Rs.147.38 crores as on
31.03.2004, thereby, reduction in outstanding dues in terms of months of
average billing from 1.15 crores to 0.54 crores.
Doubtful debts reduced to Rs.76.86 crores from 84.64 crores through
settlement and recovery thereby from the concerned beneficiaries.
It is attributed to the profit of the Corporation by Rs.7.78 crores.
As a result of finalization of incentive amount to be paid to the
state in previous Tripartite agreement, provision of Rs.93.98 crores kept
during the financial year 2003-04 has been withdrawn.
This has also added profit to the Corporation.

Sagar Power Station
– A Joint Venture
Narmada
Hydroelectric Development Corporation Ltd., a joint venture of NHPC and
Government of Madhya Pradesh was set up in 2002 for execution of Indira
Sagar Power Station (1000 MW) and Omkareshwar Project (520 MW) on river
Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. All
the eight units of Indira Sagar Power Station (125 x 8) have been
commissioned ahead of schedule. During
the period under review the power station generated 1331.94 million units
of energy.

Corporation has successfully spun Unit III & IV of 280 MW Dhauliganga
Project in Uttaranchal. Unit I

CONSULTANCY
SERVICES
NHPC
has been providing consultancy services in the area of Hydro Power
development for generating additional revenue for the Corporation in the
form of consultancy business. The
clients to whom the consultancy services are being provided include
agencies/organizations both in public and private sector in
India
and abroad.
During
the financial year 2004-05 new consultancy assignments amounting to
Rs.52.42 crores were received which is 477% more than the target for
“Excellent” rating which is Rs.11 crores.
The payments received during the period for the various consultancy
assignments stood at Rs.25.70 crores.
The total value of consultancy assignments on account of services
is more than Rs.211.53 crores and Rs.80.29 crores respectively.

INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY
NHPC
has made major strides in the area of IT & Communication to create
state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure within the
organization covering more than 40 locations across the country during the
period under report. These
include augmentation in the numbers of Desk Top Computers, Servers and
installation of Local Area Networks and expanding the Satellite Based
Closed User Group Communication Network.
These information infrastructure are being leveraged to deploy
applications covering critical business functions such as Project
Construction Monitoring, Generation Monitoring and Control, Materials
Management, Finance and Accounts, HR, Energy Accounting and Billing and
video conferencing. In
addition, initiatives have also been taken during this period to introduce
computerization in the niche areas such as Power Plant Maintenance, Inflor
Forecasting and for implementation of enterprise wide ERP Solution for the
organization. These
initiatives in the area of IT & Communication shall enable the
organization achieve higher level of productivity, performance and
profitability.
DEVELOPMENT
OF GEO-THERMAL PROJECTS
NHPC
is an appointed Nodal Agency for Exploitation of Geothermal Energy in the
country. NHPC has already
carried out the ranking studies through International
Consultant/Contractor viz. M/s GeothermEx, USA and six most promising
geothermal field have been identified:-.

As a first step, the proposal regarding overall development of
Tattapani geothermal fields have been prepared by NHPC & submitted to
MNES. MNES is getting certain
survey work done from NGRI and NHPC shall be associated for with further
work depending on these survey results.
HUMAN
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
The
Human Resources Development division imparted training to 6692 employees
which constituted 49.5% of the work force, against the MOU target (for
excellent training) of 45%. 566
Trainee Engineers/Officers and 498 Jr. Engineers/ Supervisors were
inducted through 30 concurrent batches of induction/orientation training
during the year 2004-05. The
department constantly made efforts to equip the employees with latest
skills and competencies to further achieve the objectives of the
organization.
PROJECTS
ABROAD
NHPC
was assigned the work relating to 1200 MW Tamanthi HE Project in
Myanmar
for preparation of pre-feasibility report.
The work has since been competed and the report is submitted with
MOP. Agreement for preparation
of pre-feasibility report for Tamanthi HE Project was signed on 13.4.2004
between Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and NHPC Ltd.
As per the agreement, NHPC conducted field survey and investigation
at the Project site in association with
Myanmar
departments.
The Corporation was also entrusted the work to explore the
feasibility of setting up a small hydro power project in
Uzbekistan
and
Tajikistan
. The officers from NHPC
visited these places and have submitted their recommendations to MEA and
MOP, Government of India and has recommended that the above said projects
can be considered for development under co-operation between
India
and
Uzbekistan
.
