| PREAMBLE |
| From
time immemorial mankind has totally been dependent on Mother Nature
for its basic needs. The dependability of human beings on earth resources is
increasing day by day. The ever-growing assault on nature's limited
resources is affecting the sustainability, especially of the non-renewably energy resources. Of late, the growing consciousness towards the
conservation of the Environment has lead to the paradigm shift from the
use of non-renewable energy resources to renewable energy resources. |

National
Hydro-electric Power Corporation, set up in 1975, has over the years
become India’s single largest organisation for harnessing hydro power.
Hydropower is a non-polluting and environmental friendly means of energy
generation. NHPC has a multi-disciplinary Environment Core
Group for
conducting Impact studies, Monitoring and Evaluation
of proposed
Environment safeguards/measures, for developing environmentally sound
Hydro-projects. |

| Since
its inception NHPC has shown its commitment towards safeguarding the
Environment. It is imperative to mention that any developmental project is
bound to have some impact on the fragile ecosystem. It is therefore
important that a project should be constructed with minimum possible
affect on the ecosystem. NHPC is conscious of its responsibilities towards
environmental sensitivity and safeguards. |

| From
the initial stage itself viz. site selection
of a new Hydro-electric power project,
to its commissioning, NHPC ensures that impact on Human
population, Forest, Flora, Fauna, Places of National and Archaeological
interests etc. is minimal. |
 |
Environment
Management Plans are framed
up and implemented to counter any
deleterious effect on the ecology, as a result of the construction of a project. As
and when required, the assistance of other environmental experts/
institutes is also taken to supplement the efforts put in by the
organisation for the
purpose. |
